Our harvesters

Moana is committed to providing the very best quality kaimoana to our customers. This starts with high quality crews.

Fishers

whānau owned, community based

Moana New Zealand doesn’t own any fishing vessels, instead, we contract a fleet of whānau owned-and-operated businesses which share our values.

We currently have 39 full time contract fishing vessels. 64% of our ika harvest is caught by Māori owned vessels, 79% with Māori crew.

Responsible Fisheries Awareness Programme

responsibility on the sea

Moana New Zealand is investing in the future of our whānau of fishers through our Responsible Fisheries Awareness (RFA) programme est. 2017.This programme was developed using experience of WWF South Africa’s Responsible Fisheries Programme and aims to help our fishers by ensuring they have the most up to date training as well as access to industry experts on a range of relevant topics, from New Zealand Fisheries management to health and safety, compliance, and having a holistic, future-focused approach to New Zealand’s fisheries. This programme is how we help prepare our fishers with skills in software and systems ahead of them becoming statutory. For Moana, it is also a part of our responsibility to ensure that our fishers are equipped with the necessary skills and expertise to be able to live by our value of kaitiakitanga.

Fisher Information

our whānau of fishers

The Moana New Zealand whānau of inshore fishers are located all around te Ika a Māui (the North Island).

We're a big whānau and a diverse one too. We have intergenerational fishing whānau for who fishing is in their blood, and Māori fishers who share a deep connection to the moana (ocean) too. Our fishers all own their own boats. They're their own bosses, and so alongside the personal responsibility they feel towards looking after the moana, they also feel a professional responsibility which is why our fishers are actively involved in learning and upskilling through participating in our Responsible Fisheries Awareness Programme.
