The Māori Fisheries Act 2004 established Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (trading as Moana New Zealand) and Te Ohu Kaimoana to hold and allocate Māori fisheries settlement assets on behalf of Iwi. The Act created the framework for transferring settlement quota and other fisheries assets to Iwi in line with the 1992 Fisheries Settlement. Twenty years on, the Māori Fisheries Amendment Act 2024 was enacted to support governance changes to strengthen iwi involvement and rangatiratanga over their fisheries assets.
