How we fish

With a lightness of touch thanks to our Precision Seafood Harvesting & Harvest Footprint Project

Harvest Footprint Project

knowing where we fish

In 2021 we reset our sustainability strategy to focus on lightening our harvest and farming practices. With the introduction of electronic reporting, with carefully managed analysis and greater information on habitats of significance, we'll be in a better position to make more informed decisions together around how we fish now and into the future.

Precision Seafood Harvesting

careful precision fishing

Many of our fishers use Precision Seafood Harvesting (PSH), a selective trawl system which allows fishers to target specific fish species and sizes, with undersized fish being able to swim free. Resulting in a more humane and targeted harvest.

In line with kaitiakitanga, PSH results in the supply and consistency of premium quality, sustainably harvested seafood products. We hope this will lead to a more productive and resilient New Zealand fishing industry.

Onboard cameras

compliancy at sea

We have voluntarily had cameras onboard our entire inshore contract trawl fishing fleet for the past eight years. Some boats have up to three cameras on board, which helps to ensure compliancy at sea, as well as keeping an eye out for sea birds and dolphins.

We are working hard to develop a sustainable seafood industry—one that respects the ocean's resources and the livelihoods of our fishing partners. Our seafood comes from the world’s best fisheries, where our harvesters fish in areas of abundance, reduce by-catch, and practice low-impact methods.
