Responsible Fisher Workshops

Responsible Fisher Workshops

Responsible Fisher Programme brings together Moana New Zealand’s network of contract fishers to learn about best practice fisheries management, vessel management, health and safety, compliance, industry updates, technology designed to assist in conservation efforts and to network. It has been running since 2016.

Each year, guest speakers provide insight and updates about protection areas, restoration plans, taonga areas, marine biodiversity, Māori astrology and ancient traditions within Te Ao Māori.

More than 30 of our contracted fishers attended workshops in Thames and Whangārei in 2021, while more than 60 attended workshops in the same locations in 2019 which included the introduction of new electronic reporting systems.

2023 was no different, as we set out to meet our contract fishers in the regions with a review of key programmes from Moana, guest speakers from government agencies and Australia, and fishers’ experiences on the water.

The feedback from our fishers is always positive and they appreciate the opportunities for company and industry updates, but also to connect with each other.
