Seabird mitigation on the water

Our fishers utilise bird mitigation devices and have analysed results from camera trials to prevent catching these taonga species. They also receive training in Seabird Smart techniques to minimise potential interaction with seabirds.

Each year Moana New Zealand long line fishers attend the annual Great Barrier Island Black Petrel fledgling banding effort. The ongoing project is a collaboration between ecologists, Iwi, Fisheries Inshore New Zealand and NGOs.

Industry has financially supported electronic monitoring for better understanding interactions with protected species. Significant investment has been made on specific black petrel research and monitoring initiatives to support management covering population studies, electronic monitoring studies, observer coverage and bycatch mitigation.

Moana New Zealand remains engaged regarding ongoing practicable developments to improve mitigation of black petrel and electronic monitoring has been announced by the Minister which will complement the existing black petrel EM project.

Moana New Zealand contract fisher Zak Olsen says: “It’s such an experience taking new crew up the mountain to share the love of Black Petrels with Biz and her project team.”

“Our crew from the Southern Cross [vessel] leaves the mountain with an invigorated approach to seabird mitigation and a renewed respect and love for these beautiful seabirds. It was extra special this trip to be able to take along the matriarch of Southern Cross to share the experience with us.”

“A big thanks to Moana New Zealand for helping to make this trip possible and investing in the next generation of fishermen. This year we were able to take nine people up to the colony to tag chicks and learn about the Black Petrel.”
