Moana New Zealand offers a unique opportunity for one aspiring Māori to spend six months in Japan to study and work in the kaimoana industry through the Global Fisheries Scholarship.
The successful Global Fisheries Scholarship recipient will gain deeper knowledge of the sector at globally recognised Japanese seafood company Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltd (Nissui)—from aquaculture to processing, fishing to food technology, sales and marketing—all while immersing themselves in daily Japanese life, language and culture.
The scholarship is well respected in the seafood industry and individuals who have had a successful time in Japan often find it a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth.
Moana New Zealand Chief Executive Steve Tarrant says, “I’m thrilled Nissui and Moana continue to provide this scholarship for rangatahi and young professional Māori who have a strong desire to work in our industry. Moana New Zealand and Nissui hold joint ownership in Sealord and share a long-term view when it comes to people. We are very excited to invest in talented Māori to support their passions in our sector.”
The scholarship was established in 2001 as a joint initiative between Te Ohu Kaimoana and Nissui as an innovative programme to develop and grow the skills of Māori wanting to work or already employed in the New Zealand kaimoana industry.
Applications close 12pm Friday 2 August. Candidates can submit their applications directly through the Moana New Zealand website.
